WTE Fly Ash

One of the world’s most expensive hazardous wastes to dispose of — and the biggest economic opportunity for geopolymer technology.

Problem / Context

When municipal waste is incinerated in a Waste-to-Energy (WTE) plant, the fly ash collected in the gas filtration system contains high levels of heavy metals, chloride salts, and dioxins. This type of ash is classified as hazardous waste and must be disposed of in special landfills or stabilized at very high costs.

In many countries, the cost of processing MSWI fly ash reaches $150–400/ton (market confirmation required), creating a huge financial burden for WTE plants.

Market size

Market size

  • Approximately 40–50 million tons/year of WTE fly ash are generated globally.
  • The number of WTE plants is increasing rapidly in China, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.
  • Vietnam is building a series of waste-to-energy plants → raw material supply is expected to increase significantly in the next 5 years.

Technical

Technical specifications

  • High heavy metal content: Pb, Zn, Cd, Cr
  • High chloride content — the biggest challenge when recycling.
  • Highly alkaline, smooth, easily dispersed.

ProtectGD Solution

ProtectGD's Geopolymer technology immobilizes heavy metals directly within the aluminosilicate network structure, locking in toxic ions instead of simply mixing them. The breakthrough Nowash WTE Fly Ash (2025) allows treatment without the costly salt washing step, significantly reducing costs and wastewater generation.

BRING VALUE

Economy

WTE plants are shifting from paying landfill fees to becoming a valuable source of raw materials — this is the most economically viable waste stream for ProtectGD.

Eliminates hazardous landfilling, immobilizes heavy metals, and reduces CO₂ emissions by 70–80% compared to traditional fired/cement materials.
